Morning Ice Crystals

Those aren’t stars in the sky, they’re ice crystals floating around. As I was photographing this morning’s sunset I looked up an noticed the crystals sparkling in the light. I don’t remember ever seeing that before. I took some photos but wasn’t sure they’d show up in the images. At one point a faint ice-bow appeared on the horizon, but it was not visible in the pictures I took.

I made basic adjustments in Adobe Camera Raw and added a curves adjustment layer in Photoshop.

That’s a Big Pile of Rocks

This photo was taken along the Goose Creek trail in the Lost Creek Wilderness. It is above some old cabins and near some equipment that was once used in an attempt to dam the creek. It’s a 3-exposure HDR image at +/-2EV.

I blended and tone mapped the files in Photomatix Pro. After blending I used the Camera Raw filter in Photoshop to made basic adjustments, remove chromatic aberrations and reduce noise. I added a curves adjustment layer and cropped.

Blackbird Singing

I love the sound red-winged blackbirds make. It reminds me of going fishing when I was a kid. This red-winged blackbird was photographed at the Fountain Valley Nature Center. It’s a great place to go in the spring to see migrating birds as well as those who hang around with us all year.

I made basic adjustments in Adobe Camera Raw. In Photoshop I used the Spot Healing Brush to remove some spots, then I added a curves adjustment layer and cropped.

Red Cowling

This is one of the engines from the B-25 bomber “In the Mood” that was used in the film Pearl Harbor. It currently resides at the World War II Aircraft Museum in Colorado Springs.
This is an HDR image made with 3 frames at +/-2EV and blended in Photomatix. After blending and tone mapping, I duplicated the original layer, converted it to black and white and used a mask to reveal the red cowling. I could have done the same thing by adding a black and white adjustment layer and manipulating the accompanying mask. I then added a curves adjustment layer and cropped.

Shadows on the Snow

This photo was taken in the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness near Huron Peak. It is a hand-held shot that I took while snowshoeing. I really like the shadows the trees are casting on the snow. I had to dig my truck out once on the drive in and several times on the drive out.

I made basic adjustments and removed chromatic aberrations and spots in the sky in Adobe Camera Raw. In Photoshop I added black & white and curves adjustment layers.
