After the Storm

This is a shot of Blanca Peak and Ellingwood Point after a snowstorm. It’s a 3-exposure HDR image (+/-1 EV) blended and tone mapped in Photomatix.

After blending I made basic adjustments and applied a gradient to the sky with the Camera Raw filter. In Photoshop I added black & white and curves adjustment layers. I selected the mountains and added an exposure adjustment layer to them. I then cropped.

Blanca and Ellingwood

I shot this photo standing next to the Huerfano River as the first light of the day hits Blanca Peak and Ellingwood Point. This is a 3-exposure HDR image (+/-2EV) processed in Photomatix.
After blending in Photomatix I used the Camera Raw filter in Photoshop to make basic adjustments and adjust the color with the HSL tool. I selected the sky, inverted the selection and added a hue/saturation adjustment layer to the resulting mask to reduce the blues and cyans in the shadow areas. I added a curves adjustment layer.

This photo was taken at Garden of the Gods after the big rains we had in September of 2013. What used to be a small reservoir filled with water and stayed a couple of weeks. By this time the water was very brown and didn’t smell very good.

This is a 3-exposure HDR image (+/-2EV) processed in Photomatix.

After blending and tone mapping in Photomatix I made basic adjustments and removed chromatic aberrations with the Camera Raw filter in Photoshop. I used the Spot Healing Brush to remove some artifacts. I then selected the lower half of the frame with the Quick Selection Brush and used a channel mixer adjustment layer to remove the brown tint created by the mud in the water. I also added a curves adjustment layer.

This photo was taken in the Collegiate Peaks Wildnerness area near Huron Peak. It’s a 3-exposure HDR image (+/-2 EV) of the sunset.

I blended and tone mapped the 3 files in Photomatix and made basic adjustments, removed chromatic aberrations, applied lens corrections and reduced noise in Adobe Camera Raw. I then added a curves adjustment layer in Photoshop.

Morning Ice Crystals

IMG_8382

Those aren’t stars in the sky, they’re ice crystals floating around. As I was photographing this morning’s sunset I looked up an noticed the crystals sparkling in the light. I don’t remember ever seeing that before. I took some photos but wasn’t sure they’d show up in the images. At one point a faint ice-bow appeared on the horizon, but it was not visible in the pictures I took.

I made basic adjustments in Adobe Camera Raw and added a curves adjustment layer in Photoshop.

This photo was taken along the Goose Creek trail in the Lost Creek Wilderness. It is above some old cabins and near some equipment that was once used in an attempt to dam the creek. It’s a 3-exposure HDR image at +/-2EV.

I blended and tone mapped the files in Photomatix Pro. After blending I used the Camera Raw filter in Photoshop to made basic adjustments, remove chromatic aberrations and reduce noise. I added a curves adjustment layer and cropped.
